NFL 2008 Revisited

It is time to revisit my comments at the start of the 2008 NFL season. http://www.xanga.com/mickyo/672858757/nfl-2008/

The good: Denver went 8-8 as I expected. It was a disappointing season. The offense was strong and the defense terrible. The special teams were a mess too. They should have been 10-6. The injuries hurt, but losing to awful teams hurt more.

The bad: New England and Dallas aren't meeting in the Super Bowl, they missed the playoffs. With the Brady injury New England's championship hopes were gone. Given how the season went, with Brady I think they would have been in the Super Bowl. Dallas was a mess, it will be a while before I pick them to be champions.

The ugly: Matt Ryan was offensive rookie of the year. He had a great season. I said he would be terrible and a bust. Not quite right on that one. It doesn't make any sense to me, he just wasn't good in college. The rest of the offense at Boston College the last three years should be ashamed of themselves. The rookie of the year vote was 44-3-2-1. Atlanta came out of nowhere to make the playoffs. So at least for now I have missed this one huge. Four quarterbacks have won the award, the others are Vince Young, Ben Roethlisberger, and Dennis Shaw. So of the other three only one has had a successful career.

US Election Recap

No analysis or commentary here, just a predictions review:

President
Obama 53 McCain 46 - Exactly as predicted
Obama 365 McCain 173 - I missed North Carolina and Indiana and a Nebraska district

Senate
Dem 55 Rep 43 Ind 2 - as it stands now - I missed Alaska, figuring a guy convicted of seven felonies a week before the election would lose

House
Dem 257 Rep 178 - as it stands now - Relatively close to my call

Update - The senate race in Alaska has flipped, it is now Dem 56 Rep 42 Ind 2, with all seats matching my predictions. Minnesota is in a recount, Georgia has a runoff.

Riders - End of Regular Season

The Riders finished the regular season at 12-6. That is definitely better than I thought a few weeks ago, but probably about what I expected to start the year. It helps that the receivers are getting healthy. It is strange that they finished the regular season with the same record as last year. Last year's team was far superior in my mind. Last year I was very optimistic going into the playoffs. This year I'm not. I like the Riders chances against BC to start the playoffs, but I am worried about the Calgary game that would follow. The Riders just don't have a good quarterback. They have three that are okay, and that doesn't seem like a recipe for success for me. The defensive line needs to step up as well.

Dressler is great, he should be rookie of the year. If Fantuz is healthy he has a great shot at Most Outstanding Canadian next year. But I hope the Riders have a new quarterback in 2009.

NFL 2008

The NFL season starts up on Thursday, so I figured I would make some predictions. For the Super Bowl, I will take New England over Dallas. Denver, my team, I will guess at 8-8. For a multi-year prediction, I think Matt Ryan, quarterback of the Falcons, will have a bad career. He was the third pick in the draft, and loved by almost everyone except me. I don't think the #61 rated college quarterback is very good. He is very good at throwing interceptions I guess. I guess in 2006 he was #50, so maybe it was just a down year. He was #38 in 2005. So he gets worse with experience as well. But since he is 6'-5" I'm sure all those problems will work themselves out. Sounds like the next Dan McGwire to me.

Sorry the links don't work, Xanga used to work a lot easier. Maybe it is a Mac compatibility thing, but I doubt it.
